My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Derek for our anniversary. The hotel is very nicely appointed. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were nicely decorated in a modern motif. And the excellent rate we got from web made the experience bearable. Bearable? Well, the shower control in the bathroom was stuck and had to be forcibly unstuck for the shower to work. Why cleaning staff would not find this and report is beyond me. The towels were thin and rough, More like what you would expect at a budget motel. Finally, we ate at Valentino's. The food was good, but not great, and certainly not reflective of the $* price on the entrees. Our waiter was attentive and very knowlegible about the wines. He recommended a superb wine that was near the bottom of the wine list price range, but went well with our veal and lamb entrees. And to top it all off - $*/night to park your car. Come on. All said and done, Hotel Derek is a run of the mill hotel masquerading as a luxury hotel. If you can get in at a discount price, go for it, but no way is the weekday rack rate supported by the overall quality.

Went to Houston for a weekend getaway by myself. Hotel was great for the price. Walking distance to Sullivans and Capones...two great bars. The bar in Hotel was nice but not much going on. If you want a pool that you can get a tan this one is not the one. Pool between 2 buildings and gets alot of shade. Other than that..bed very confy and room was very nice for the money.

The hotel was ok, but not more than ok. The room service is not really available - when we called, they told us they had closed early because they had too little business. This complaint has been made by other travelers about this hotel. Our bathroom sink would not drain. There were many extra charges that we did not expect. The lobby was packed with really loud young people every night, so if you are looking for a place to take your prom date this might be the place. Not for the business traveler.

I made reservations for my husband and sons for a weekend trip. There is no parking. The pool was smaller than the hotel room. In all everything that was guaranteed was not there. Disappointing in todays times. Will stick with an Embassy Suite or a Holiday Inn. There you know what you are getting guaranteed!
